Instantly, Dan knew: That’s my guy. Robson wasn’t just any tattoo artist; he was the one Dan trusted to bring his vision to life, someone who understood that this tattoo would be more than just artwork. It would be a lifelong reminder of strength, family, and survival.

A Life-Altering Diagnosis

In 2021, Dan’s life took a sudden, terrifying turn. He was rushed to the hospital with sepsis, an infection that became life-threatening almost instantly. The doctors told him he’d have only 30 minutes to live without an emergency operation. Left with no time and fearing the worst, Dan recorded a video message for his wife, Sarah, and his son, Leander. In those final moments, he faced the possibility that he might not make it out of the hospital.

After the operation, the news wasn’t good. The doctors told Dan he’d likely never walk again, train in martial arts, or lift weights—everything that once defined his life. Dan’s reality seemed bleak, a shadow of his former self. But he wasn’t ready to surrender. With determination, support, and therapy, he fought to regain not only his physical health but also his mental resilience. PTSD hit hard, but acknowledging it became one of the most important steps in his recovery. Seeking therapy helped him rebuild his strength and put him on the path to becoming himself again.

In December 2023, a freak accident at home led him to accidentally sever one of his fingertips. In a rush to the hospital, finger in a bag, Dan’s car was sideswiped by another vehicle. All he could think about was, Is my finger still in that bag? The incident was just another chapter in the long story of his resilience. When it came time to start his tattoo, Robson and Dan decided to add this experience to the design. They chose to represent Dan’s missing fingertip on his tattoo of Hercules, making the tattoo a literal reflection of Dan’s scars, his humanity, and his journey. Months later, Dan still finds himself catching his breath when he looks at it, reminded of all he has overcome.

A Family Tribute

Each element of the tattoo carries meaning and significance. It isn’t just ink; it’s Dan’s family, strength, and triumph over adversity. In 2019, Dan met his wife, Sarah, and together they built a family, now including two sons, Leander and Xander. Robson worked these inspirations into the tattoo beautifully.

The tattoo features Alexander the Great alongside a lion, representing Dan’s son Xander—his name’s root. Leander, whose name means “lion man,” has his place on Dan’s arm as well. But perhaps the most touching part is that Sarah hadn’t yet seen the completed tattoo. For nearly three months, she avoided looking at Dan’s left arm, waiting until the day it was fully complete.
