Tattoo Diaries Volume Two: Luca’s Black Line Floral Sleeve Tattoo

Tattoo Diaries is a creative collaboration between No Regrets and Rotterdam-based photographer, Sud, celebrating the stories, emotions, and artistry behind people’s tattoos. In this seventh instalment, we meet Luca, whose bold black line floral sleeve, crafted by resident artist Giovanna Lavezo at No Regrets London, tells a deeply personal story of identity, growth, and joy.
For Luca, getting tattooed was far more than just an aesthetic decision. It was a declaration of self-acceptance and a celebration of life after 40.
“I wanted a tattoo to celebrate my life after 40 and new self-awareness,” Luca shares. “After struggling for many years to accept me being queer, and myself in general, I’ve found my confidence and improved self-awareness thanks to my family, friends and LGBT+ community.”
This black line floral sleeve tattoo represents that journey, one of resilience, love, and personal evolution. The sweeping macro designs of peonies, chrysanthemums, and leaves weave together symbols of nature and rebirth. A bird rests amongst them, a quiet emblem of freedom and renewal.
“The tattoo connects all the other tattoos I did before,” Luca explains. “It represents the result of all my previous struggles and work I’ve done on myself.”
The Vision: A Bold, Black Line Floral Sleeve Tattoo
Luca’s idea had been years in the making. “It was planned,” they recall. “I had the idea a few years back, but I was looking for the right artist and studio. I had a few consultations with other artists for this tattoo in the past, but they did not understand the concept or did not match my expectations.”
That search led them to Giovanna Lavezo. “I loved her artwork and tattoos online, and I thought she had the right sensitivity and technical skills for my tattoo.”
The tattoo’s concept combined Luca’s love of large, macro-style artwork with bold black lines and nature-inspired imagery. “I always liked large tattoos with macro and bold artworks, with bold lines and nature-inspired, but with an artistic touch,” Luca says.
After a few creative sessions, Giovanna presented a series of sketches that perfectly captured Luca’s vision. “It was perfect for what I had in mind,” they say. “We combined her sketches together to form the sleeve.”
The final piece strikes a harmonious balance, “a mix of masculine and feminine, with darker and lighter areas”, an artistic embodiment of Luca’s identity and the energy of their 40s.
For Luca, the tattoo is both grounding and empowering. “It brings me joy every time I look at it. And confidence.”
The reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. “People constantly stop me on the street or in shops to ask me who designed it and to tell me it’s beautiful,” he laughs. “My friends love it and they all say it somehow really represents my personality.”
When asked what his tattoo would say if it could talk, Luca doesn’t hesitate: “This is so gay.”
It’s a playful, proud nod to the self-love and acceptance that inspired the artwork in the first place.
Reflecting on his tattoo journey, Luca describes their experience at No Regrets London as exceptional. “I had an excellent experience, they are a great team, and I would definitely go back if I decide to get another tattoo.”
