The eighth instalment of Tattoo Diaries Volume Two takes us inside the story of Jake, whose striking mythology tattoos were created by Vinicius at No Regrets Bristol. For Jake, each piece is more than art; it’s a reflection of his fascination with myth, symmetry, and timeless storytelling, all brought to life through Vini’s unique illustrative style.

Jake’s Journey Into Mythology Tattoos

Jake’s tattoos are deeply rooted in mythology. On his right arm and shoulder, he carries the Fates of Greek mythology, their threads intertwined as the web of Arachne. Across his chest sits Cerberus, the three-headed guardian of the underworld.

“I’ve always loved these stories and any kind of mythology I find extremely interesting, how each culture has their own,” Jake explains. “With Greek gods, I like the fact that although they are depicted as having immense power, immortality, and knowledge, they are far closer to humans than other polytheistic beliefs. They’re just as susceptible to jealousy, insecurity, spite, and immaturity as everyone else can be.”

For Jake, the human qualities of these gods, their flaws and emotions, make them fascinating subjects for mythology tattoos, giving each piece depth and meaning beyond its visual impact.

Choosing Vinicius: Style and Skill

Jake initially sought out Vinicius due to his unique artistic style.

“My artist was Vinicius. I went with him initially because I found his work to be extremely stylistic and unique to him. There are a lot of tattoos you see, and although they might be really good, they look very much like any other. I hadn’t seen anything like Vini’s, and found the illustrative style and shading he uses to be immensely interesting.”

The arm tattoo was carefully planned, while the chest panel was more spontaneous. “I planned the arm tattoo, but the chest piece was more of an impulse. I’ve wanted to get my chest done for a while, but I actually went in to have a consultation to have my inner arm filled in, but couldn’t think of what to have, so I went with the full chest panel.”

Jake returned to Vinicius for the chest piece because of the care and thought that go into every tattoo. “You can tell he puts a great deal of thought and effort into the work he does, and it shows, both in design and execution.”

Symmetry, Colour, and Personal Aesthetic

Symmetry and a consistent aesthetic have always been important to Jake.

“As far as the design, I knew I wanted something with symmetry to match my other tattoos I’ve had previously, and although I’ve not really had a long-term plan, I’ve always kept to a black & grey, and red aesthetic.”

Although Jake doesn’t plan every piece in advance, mythology continues to guide his choices. “All of my tattoos have accidentally or otherwise had a mythological theme, so I’d like to keep with that.”

Living with Mythology Tattoos

For Jake, tattoos are more than decoration; they give a sense of confidence.

“I think, like most people, tattoos give you a sense of confidence. I mean, people feel confident when they wear their favourite outfit. It’s the same for me, I just can’t take mine off, and it took 50 hours to get on.”

Reactions from others are varied but always positive. “Some people comment on the amount, others on the artwork, and others that it must have stung. It’s always positive, and I think a lot of that comes down to the fact that love or hate tattoos; it’s really good work.”

And when asked what his tattoos would say if they could speak, Jake jokes, “That moderation probably isn’t my strong suit.”
